During the discography procedure, dye is injected into one disc at a time to help identify which lumbar discs are generating pain. CT scans are taken to track the movement of the dye which helps determine the location of any torn, bulged or scarred discs.
Results are then used to determine next steps in appropriate treatment. Discography can be a useful diagnostic tool to help decide how to treat pain in the back as well as the groin, hip or leg.
