JOINT INJECTION

A joint injection is a common treatment method that is performed to manage stiffness and pain that arises in the joints due to inflammation. A typical joint injection usually consists of a combination of a corticosteroid and an anesthetic that target pain as well as inflammation and swelling.

There are a number of joints that are commonly treated through different types of injections. They include facet joints between the vertebrae of the spine, the sacroiliac joint (connects the spine to the hips), ankles, shoulders, and knees.

Immediate pain relief is usually experienced when local anesthetic is injected. This wears off after a few hours. While every patient responds differently, the anti-inflammatory medicine usually begins working in about three to five days and its effect can last for several days to a few months. The procedure can be repeated if needed.
